Events in Langkawi

As part of multicultural Malaysia, the events calendar here is a full, varied and vibrant one. Each of the country's three major ethnic groups - Malay, Chinese and Indian, has its own traditions and festivals and for the most part, tourists are welcome to join in. Other than religious events, the island also plays host to sporting events including golfing, regattas, watersports and the annual Ironman Malaysia Triathlon. Meanwhile, frequent events such as food fiestas and yacht races ensure you'll always enjoy yourself here.

Ramadan

Ramadan is one festival at which visitors need to show some decorum. Held on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, it's a time when the local Muslim community abstains from eating, drinking and various vices from dawn to sundown. On Hari Raya Aidil Fitri which marks the end of the event, islanders enjoy three days of feasting and merriment.

Chinese New Year

The island's Chinese community celebrate their most important festival in January or February as fixed by their lunar calendar. The event is marked by noisy firecrackers and lion and dragon dancers accompanied by much beating of gongs.

Deepavali

Each November on a date determined by the lunar calendar, the island's Indian community hold their most sacred and beautiful event of Deepavali, the festival of lights. Houses are lit up with lanterns, oil lamps and candles to create a delightful luminous landscape. All are welcome to join in the dancing, eating and general merriment. Should you be on the island at this time, it's not to be missed.

Langkawi Craft Festival

Each December, visitor can access arts and handicrafts created by local artisans at the festival held at the Langkawi Craft Complex. Shop for exquisite batik silk prints, silverware, dolls, puppets and finely wrought wooden items.
