Where to stay in Rome

Having been a major tourist city since the Middle Ages, it is not surprising that the many hotels Rome has can be chock-a-block even in winter. But not to worry. There are so many hotels Rome is spoiled for choice and so will you be. It also means the city is well served by two airports with flights arriving from all over the globe every day.

The best bet when you are looking for particular hotels Rome has is around the area of the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna as this is where the heartland of the smaller exclusive hotels Rome has are situated.

To keep in with the historical theme that pervades this city, most of the hotels Rome possesses are housed in centuries-old buildings, very few of the hotels Rome has are in purpose built blocks. This adds to the glamour and feel of the place that is so steeped in history.

Quieter hotels

For a more peaceful stay, try one of the hotels Rome offers near the Villa Borghese park. This is just slightly out of the main sightseeing area but is so calm and tranquil that on a sunny day with a picnic in a basket, you cannot beat it.

The villa and the park were designed in 1605 with formal gardens and sculptures. Now the four mile area contains museums, galleries, a riding school, zoo, grassy amphitheatre and man-made lake. Head for the lake to see the Ionic temple dedicated to Aesculapius, god of healing.

The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna has plenty of art from the last two centuries, some copies of which you might find in any one of the hotels Rome has. For more spectacular art, visit the Galleria Doria Pamphilj which has the greatest collection of paintings of any of the palaces, including works by Raphael and Titian.

Bernini’s Rome

There are sculptures and fountains scattered all over the city, and if there was one man who stamped his mark on Rome, it would be Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His Baroque style set the style of Rome from The Ecstasy of St Theresa to Palazzo Barberini. You can even take a two hour walk through the city that takes in all his works.

The grandest fountain, inspired by Bernini, is the Trevi Fountain built in 1762. Neptune takes centre stage in this watery world, built over the end of an aqueduct from 19 BC. Staying in one of the hotels Rome offers can be an experience in itself, from obeying an early curfew in a religious establishment like a convent, to admiring breathtaking views from a rooftop restaurant.
