When is Diwali in 2024?

This year, Diwali will be celebrated on November 1, 2024.

The Diwali celebrations actually last 5 days: October 29 to November 2, 2024. Thousands of people around the world celebrate the largest festival in the Hindu calendar, Diwali or Deepavali, which means "Row of Lights" in Sanskrit (avali = row; deepa = light).

Celebrate Diwali: Five Days of Festivities

The dates for Diwali change every year as it is based on the Hindu lunar calendar, but it usually falls between mid-October and mid-November. In 2024, the actual day of Diwali is November 1.

How are the 5 Days of Diwali Observed?

  • Day One: Cleaning
Each day of Diwali is celebrated differently, starting with the first day when people clean their homes, offices, and businesses and make new purchases, such as gold jewelry and silver kitchenware. The floors of homes are beautifully decorated with colorful sand, powder, or rice in patterns known as rangoli. Diyas or oil lamps are lit in the homes to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness.
  • Day Two: Relaxing and Staying Home
The second day, the day before Diwali, is spent relaxing and staying home. Fewer Diyas are lit, and many people clean their bodies by taking a ritual bath before sunrise and massaging their bodies with oil to relieve tension and prepare for the next day.
  • Day Three: The Actual Day of Diwali
The actual Diwali day is the third day of the festival. Throughout homes, oil lamps or Diyas are lit to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Ganesha. Family members gather for a feast and enjoy fireworks.
  • Day Four: Preparing Food and Offerings
The fourth day is the first day of the new year, when many dishes are prepared to be offered to the gods and later shared with family, relatives, friends, or neighbors. Another ritual performed on this day is constructing a mound of clay or cow dung, which is decorated with flowers and food offerings and dedicated to Krishna.
  • Day Five/Last Day: Enjoy Time with Your Siblings
The fifth and final day is a day to celebrate the special bond between brothers and sisters. Brothers visit their sisters and enjoy shared meals, exchanging sweets and gifts.
